Ten years ago, a dear friend called Stuart Morris changed my life with a single sentence.
After hiring a room at his Holistic centre for a one-day workshop, I approached him to pay the booking fee. Instead of taking payment Stuart refused and calmly asked me to “pay it forward.”
I must admit that I wasn’t sure what he meant, so enquired again. Stuart asked me to think of an amount of money that I would have happily paid him and to give it to a stranger as a random act of kindness.
Nervously I asked who, where and when? He simply said “don’t worry about that, you’ll know when the time is right.”
Two weeks later I found myself in a small charity shop with nothing much on offer, as I was about to leave Stuart’s words of “you’ll know when the time is right.” came to me.
I approached two lady’s at the counter and took an amount of money from my wallet - they both became emotional and explained that the modest amount was typically what the shop takes in a whole day, and that the charity was struggling to survive.
As I left the shop I felt different, lighter in some way. I realised that I had stepped out of my comfort zone, and that my small act of kindness had not only helped another, but me too! It had taught me a great lesson, that in a world that tells us we need more to be happy. It is in fact the opposite that holds the key to a good life.
